Ashe design journals

My trusty journal’s are full of ideas, sketches, schemes, plots and pictures…A quick sketch can capture the seed of a great idea…to quickly put it down in black and white so that I can return to the idea later and continue developing the threads….the initial sketch for the “waratah” image is here..along with cut outs and other scribbles…

Ashe textile designs have always been heavily influenced by Eastern cultures – particularly Japanese and Chinese textile traditions. Another constant for me has been an interest in Australian motifs of Flora and Fauna – although – these can be tricky to work with…I don’t want to create kitsch “Australiana”!…So I have a challenge in trying to design surfaces which both contain an Oriental aesthetic and a sense of contemporary Australian design…Here is a “waratah” image I am “orientalising”…Some more development needed….but it’s getting there!
Soco Creatives Inspiration
11 Feb 2011
This was my favourite page from the latest issue of Real Living. An image from the mantelpiece in the eclectic work space compiled by the girls at Soco Creatives in Sydney. The contrast of the orangey red spider orchids compliments the vintage green vase beautifully, also the cleverly positioned piece of bark adds texture and interest. I think I will try my own version today!

Print design inspiration often comes in these moments of relaxation and re-creation…when we finally have time to see the sky….My holiday photos feature as many foliage shots as family photos! I never cease to be inspired by the graphic nature of Australian Flora.
