Print in Design NOW – Vintage/retro
16 Mar 2010
Vintage no longer seems to mean that you found it in a recycling boutique and had to get your nan to take it in for you. Vintage and retro is a new genre in textile and fashion design and I love it! All those beautiful textile designs from the 50’s and 60’s and the dresses our grandmothers wore are being re-interpreted for today. Of course – we still love our op shop finds – so keep hunting girls!
This picture here is from a Burberry Prorsum range.

Decorative Textile Design of the post-war years and following the Great depression are especially interesting to me. All of a sudden the world wanted colour, exuberance and a tropical flavour which promised good times to come. Lush flowering plants prevailed in many companies designs and Palm Fronds, Birds and tropical foliage were extremely popular. Printed onto heavy bark cloths and linens, the fabrics were used extensively for outdoor settings and upholstery for that dreamy armchair in the corner of the garden. I collect samples of patio prints and I promise I will post some more for you soon!

Another addiction of mine and inspiration this season were Vintage posters. They really appeal to my need to over-stylise an image and use up every possible part of the frame with pattern and colour to depict a story. French cosmetics and perfumes have a great history of exotic and beautiful poster design and I particularly love this one with its French Art Deco styling. The use of colour is high contrast and designed to grab your attention of course! Bright, graphic and designed to make you fall in love with whatever is being sold – I Love it Love it Love it…..
Casablanca – The Movie
18 Sep 2009
I’ve always loved that word – “Casablanca.” It conjures up so many exotic ideas in my mind. The Moroccan city was immortalised forever in the 1942 classic Movie “Casablanca” and it’s still thought of one of the greatest enduring films of all time. The romance and drama are palpable, the setting impeccable – war torn Paris and Casablanca and that line of course “Here’s looking at you kid”. This movie helped me with some styling decisions for my photo shoot – vintage styling – with an Ashe twist of course!
